Alicia Clarke

Photographer

Alicia is a portrait and dance photographer with a background in performance and fine art. Born in Birmingham, England in 1975, Alicia studied contemporary dance & visual art at Nottingham Trent University before moving to London in 1990 to work as a photographer's assistant. Through assisting photographers such as Ravi Deepres and Hugo Glendinning she worked with many dance world luminaries including Michael Clark, Wayne MacGregor and Fin Walker. Although having officially traded in her dancing shoes for the camera, Alicia never quite lost the dancing bug and so now as well as providing portraiture for editorial features she also shoots movement imagery for dance companies and PR and design work. Her work has appeared in The Sunday Times, The Guardian and Dance Dynamic (to name a few), and her advertising clients have included Yellow Pages, Mars, Nicorette, Barclays and Nintendo. Alicia recently exhibited as part of Resolution! 2011 at The Place, showing portraits of selected choreographers featured in the festival, including Holly Noble. In her personal work she explores themes of identity, on the basis that any portrait or image of the body becomes a cultural site where the conflicting concerns of agency, representation and the viewer's consumption come into play. Alicia holds an MA in Photography from the London College of Communication.
